Deadpool & Wolverine; stuff you didn’t catch

There is more going on in this movie than you may realize and sooo, so many Easter Eggs. Let’s dive in.

Spoiler warning: If you haven’t seen the movie yet STOP READING.

When the Deadpool vs. Wolverine film was announced, fans of the Marvel universe knew they were in for a treat. The promise of seeing these two iconic characters—played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman—duel on the big screen was enough to send comic book aficionados into a frenzy. However, as with any Deadpool movie, this film goes beyond mere spectacle, weaving in layers of narrative and pop culture references that demand closer inspection.

Is the Marvel Multiverse ending?

One thing that is central to this movie is the concept of the Multiverse. Thanks to the events in Loki season 2 there is no fixed future anymore. Agent Paradox is now trying to end the Multiverse and become more powerful by using an antihero like Deadpool to do it. Loki, now being the god of stories may even be pulling the strings for all of this to happen.

When Cassandra Nova finds out about the time ripper she also wants to destroy all the universes so all that is left is the Void which she rules over but Deadpool and Wolverine save Deadpool’s universe with the power of their healing factor and the power of bromance.

This all seems to be setting up for a multiversal war that we will likely see unfold in the Avengers:Secret War films that are coming.

Easter Eggs

Deadpool is known for his love of Easter eggs, and this film is no exception. For eagle-eyed viewers, the movie is packed with nods to past films, hidden details, and inside jokes.

Fantastic Four references galore

There are so many Fantastic four references in this movie partly due to the new Fantastic Four movie coming but one of the ones they had the most fun with is teasing the audience with Chris Evans and leading everyone including Deadpool to believe it’s Captain America but then revealing it’s actually Johnny Storm.

Ryan Reynolds loves Candy

Apparently Ryan is a huge fan of the late John Candy stating that he is his all time favorite comedian. There are many nods to Candy in this movie as well as all of the other Deadpool movies. For instance, the coffee mug that reads I like me is a reference to the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Deadpool reading The Canadian Mounted, a reference to John Candy.

Inside Wade Wilson’s locker at the car dealership a book can be spotted called the Canadian Mounted which John Candy was also reading during Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Deadpool was also reading it in Deadpool 2.

Wade also wears a Hawaiian shirt during his birthday party similar to the one John Candy wears in Brewster’s Millions.

Fans of Gossip Girl?

Gossip Girl was a 2007 drama that starred Blake Lively before she met and married Ryan Reynolds. Apparently, Rob Liefeld who is credited for creating Deadpool, was a huge fan of hers and the show Gossip Girl before ever meeting Ryan Reynolds. According to Rob he created Lady Deadpool based on Blake Lively’s character in Gossip Girl. In the Deadpool & Wolverine film, Lady Deadpool appears and is played by none other than Blake Lively.

Speaking of Rob Liefeld

One of my favorite Easter eggs in the movie takes place in the third act when Wolverine and Deadpool are about to face off against all the other Deadpools from other universes. Deadpool and Wolverine stand in front of a store called Liefeld’s Just Feet. This is both an Easter egg and a joke because Rob has been made fun of for decades for not being able to draw feet.

These aren’t ALL the great easter eggs in the movie so go ahead and comment below the things I didn’t mention here.

Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell has been an illustrator and creative designer for two decades in the entertainment industry working on everything from films to games to comic book and book covers. After massive psychedelic experiments, Matt traveled to a different realm where he encountered Celtic gods who told him their tales. Matt now shares those stories through his comic series Mythica.
