Teaching people how to tell their stories through the medium of comics is what my comic class is focused on.
Each semester I reassure my students that they don’t need to be highly skilled artists in order to learn how to better tell stories visually but it can certainly help!
We start the class by learning what comics are and how they came to be. We learn the terms and then we begin learning about panel flow through studying examples.
Then each student is given a half dozen different scripts to choose from. They can make it their own by changing environments, gender or whatever they want as long as the premise and conflict do not change.
Together we work out the rough drafts and formulate a plan for the page that has good pacing and flow. Even if all you can draw is a stick figure then we make sure and have the stick figure facing the right way and give us an emoji for expression we can work with it.
This 15 week course covering everything from page layout to penciling techniques happens twice a year at Pikes Peak State College. Usually in the Spring and Summer. I also use many of the lectures and materials in the tutorials I make for patrons on patreon.
